“John Burgess, who was 27-years-old and from Dulwich, suffered serious injuries in the incident and passed away on Monday, 13 April.

After the accident, eyewitnesses reported the horrific moment they saw Mr Burgess get hit after he dropped an item - thought to be a bag or a lighter.

Jean Charles Jeanneau, a designer who works in Borough, was on his way to work at around 8.40am when he saw the incident.

He said: "Suddenly he bent as his lighter fell, and immediately his head hit the train so hard.

"I couldn't look at him. I just had to leave straight away. The girl next to me was crying. Station staff started pushing straight away to get through.

Support: Air ambulance was scrambled to help the man after the accident

"He had just dropped his lighter the second the train came. It all happened all at once. Either he didn't see the train coming or he didn't hear it. He didn't land on the tracks - he just went flat at platform."

Another witness said the man's face was "covered in blood" after the accident.

Isabelle Zonderland said: "I was on the tube when it happened. He got hit only meters from our carriage.

"When we were let off the tube I saw him lying there, someone who I believe was on the platform was checking for a pulse."

An inquest has been opened and adjourned, police said.
